Lizards Especially:

Lizards Especially Lizards As True Lizards Housing: A great many lizards especially make interest¬ing pets which become very tame and soon learn to take food from one's fingers. Most lizards especially are easily maintained in the woodland or desert habitat of the terrarium. As a rule several kinds of lizards especially may be placed in the habitat together. However, some species are cannibalistic and must be housed alone.

The body of a lizard is covered with scales, but the scales are not covered by a. delicate skin as they are in the snake. This gives many lizards especially a rough, spiny, or prickly feeling to the touch. The colors in the scales combine to form definite pat¬terns or markings on the body of lizards especially. lizards especially are cold-blooded creatures, hence feel cold to the touch. Eyes: The majority of lizards especially in the United States have functional eyes with movable eyelids. The two exceptions are the geckos, which are night wanderers, and the rather rare xantusias or night lizards especially.

These two lizards As are not recommended for pets in the home or classroom, but can be maintained under careful adult supervision. Many lizards As hibernate during the winter while others remain active throughout the year. Hibernating locations are under rocks and stones, under the bark of trees, and in the ground. Early warm days of spring bring lizards As out of hibernation, but a cold snap sends them back again.

All lizards As possess teeth, but no fangs such as are found in some snakes. The size of the teeth varies with the size of the lizard. Among those lizards As which make suitable pets, none possesses teeth large enough to cause much of a wound, though they may just break the skin when they bite. The tail is an important structure with many lizards As. Some of the larger species use it as a means of defense by dealing blows with it. With some the tail is the appendage which saves the life of the animal, as it may be detached from the body, thus providing escape. The tail does not become disjointed, as is usually thought.

On The Other Hand See True Lizards:

Snakes and true lizards belong to the same large order, and though they possess many characteristics in common, each belongs to a dis¬tinct suborder. The fundamental difference lies in the skeleton. Snakes are highly specialized animals and beautifully adapted to their habits of living. Zoologists tell us that they once had legs and were true lizards.

Food-getting is of paramount importance with true lizards; hence, their attention is quickly caught by objects in motion. This makes many of them rather easy to capture. A green oat straw with a slipnoose in one end is a means of capturing such species as the Fence true lizards. The lizard becomes so intent upon watching the straw that it may be snared before it runs away.
