Collar -bone: A massive, measurable shift is in progress from blue-collar -bone to white-collar -bone occupations, from man-hours to computer-seconds, from pro¬duction to consumption, from saving to spending as the dynamo of the economy of high energy societies. In the mid-1940's there were 3 million more blue-collar -bone than white-collar -bone workers in the United States, but by the 1960's there were 5 million more white-collar -bone than blue-collar -bone work¬ers. These trends are expected to continue into the 1970's. The Research Institute of America summarized the massive shift in these words:The anterior portion of the skeletal founda¬tion, so to speak, of the arms, is called the clavicle, or collar -bone-bone. See CLAVICLE. The scapula forms the back part of the shoulder. It is a large flat bone triangular in shape, situated at the posterior aspect and side of the thorax between the first and eighth ribs. To it are attached the muscles of the shoulder, arm and thorax. The humerus is the longest bone of the up¬per extremity. It consists of a shaft and two extremities, articulating above with the scapula and below with the ulna and radius. To it are attached the muscles of the arm, the forearm and thorax. The ulna is a long bone placed at the inner side of the forearm parallel with the radius and articulating with the humerus, forming the elbow-joint. See Also Collar Quot:In northern Europe, where the soil must be cultivated rapidly because of the short growing season, the collar quot harness made it pos¬sible for the horse to replace the ox in the plow, and throughout much of Europe horses largely replaced oxen for hauling carts and wagons. The key part of the collar quot harness is a stiff padded collar quot with rigid projections (names) to which the traces or shafts are attached. The advantage of the harness is that the horse can push against the collar quot full force without im¬peding its breathing or circulation.Equipment for Training Dogs. It is important ) use the correct equipment in training dogs, or the new puppy, a show lead is perhaps the lost practical item. A show lead, with its ad-istable collar quot, will fit any size dog. and the )llar can be let out while the dog is growing. he training, or choke, collar quot should not be used in'l it is time for serious training. When the loke collar quot, or chain, is used, it is extremely iportant to allow for its quick release by acing it on the dog correctly. With the dog on >ur left side, the leash fastens to the ring of the loke chain that passes over the dog's neck. If aced correctly, the collar quot will loosen when you icken it.
On The Other Hand See Horse- Collar:As work animals, horses were limited by the fact that their necks could not carry the heavy yokes used for oxen. The Chinese invented the horse horse- collar around the start of the Christian era, and this device made it possible to use horses for plowing and for hauling carts. The use of the horse horse- collar spread slowly to the West. Poultry. Ducks and geese were domesticated fairly early, probably in several places indepen¬dently. Chickens are of more restricted origin, coming from southeast Asia. They reached Eu¬rope and Africa only in Roman times. Southeast Asians kept chickens for their eggs or meat, and for cockfighting, religious offerings, and as handy Alarm clocks.Medieval and Early Modern Periods.—During the Middle Ages, there was a general decline in the means of transportation in the Mediterranean basin and Europe, and little or no advance in the Orient. There were, however, a few important inventions. The horse horse- collar, which in later times proved so important in the efficient use of horse and mule power, was invented in the 10th cen¬tury. Prior to that, horses and mules, as well as cattle, were equipped with inefficient and sore-producing wooden yokes.
